Asif Kapadia’s Reframing of Celebrity Through Nonfiction Cinema

Robbie BuckinghamBy Robbie BuckinghamJuly 17, 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Asif Kapadia has transformed how audiences view celebrity by using the documentary format not to glorify fame, but to question its construction. His films dismantle the myths surrounding high-profile figures and expose the psychological, social, and media dynamics that shape their lives. Rather than offering admiration or critique, Kapadia builds a framework where fame is portrayed as both a performance and a pressure, a narrative written not only by those who live it but also by the institutions and observers who surround them.

In Amy, this reframing is most evident in the way Kapadia avoids conventional tropes of rise and fall. Instead of dramatizing Winehouse’s celebrity as a singular arc, he illustrates how her image was constantly being rewritten by others—tabloids, managers, fans, and even her own lyrics. The footage captures her unease with public attention, with key moments showing her reacting uncomfortably to camera crews, reporters, and crowds. Kapadia pairs these visuals with personal recordings and handwritten lyrics, giving Winehouse agency through her own words even as the film critiques the forces that silenced her. The result is a portrait not of a star, but of a person navigating public life under siege.

In Senna, the approach is subtler but no less revealing. The film juxtaposes Ayrton Senna’s public persona as a national hero with private moments of vulnerability and frustration. Race footage, fan reactions, and press commentary frame him as a symbol, while behind-the-scenes radio transmissions and interviews reveal the toll of living up to that symbol. Kapadia resists idolization, choosing instead to explore how identity is split between performance and personal conviction. The racing world, with its national rivalries and corporate interests, is shown as a stage that both elevates and confines its central figure.

Kapadia’s treatment of Diego Maradona offers yet another dimension to his critique of celebrity. Drawing from a vast trove of archival footage, the film reveals how Maradona’s life was defined by dualities—public worship and private chaos, athletic genius and reckless abandon. The film captures how his fame became a spectacle beyond his control, particularly during his years in Naples. Kapadia highlights how political, religious, and cultural narratives were projected onto him, turning Maradona into a mythic figure. But within that myth, Kapadia searches for the man: someone constantly adapting to the expectations placed on him, often at great personal cost.

What connects all these films is a rejection of linear, celebratory storytelling. Kapadia does not resolve the contradictions in his subjects’ lives. Instead, he lets them remain open and uneasy. By doing so, he pushes viewers to reconsider how celebrity narratives are built and consumed. Rather than relying on voiceover commentary or traditional interviews, he allows archival material to speak for itself, enabling the audience to experience the tension between how these figures saw themselves and how they were seen by the world.

Kapadia’s editorial choices reinforce this perspective. He often delays or omits key life events, presenting them not as climactic reveals but as elements embedded in a continuum of pressure and change. In Amy, her Grammy win is not framed as a triumphant climax but as a deeply ambivalent moment, one marked by absence and personal turmoil. In Diego Maradona, goals and victories are intercut with moments of surveillance, escape, and withdrawal. These juxtapositions disrupt audience expectations, encouraging reflection over resolution.

Through this lens, Asif Kapadia has redefined what it means to document a life lived in the public eye. His films are not biographies in the traditional sense; they are meditations on identity, perception, and the machinery of fame. By centering the subject’s own voice while exposing the structures around them, Kapadia restores a sense of humanity to individuals often reduced to headlines. His work invites us to look past the surface of celebrity and consider what it costs—and what it conceals.
